Typhoon Usagi hits southern China

Typhoon Usagi, the year’s most powerful typhoon, has hit southern China. The storm with winds up to 180 km/h has been classified as a severe typhoon and has affected 3.5 million people on the Chinese mainland.

Roads were flooded and washed out, power was knocked out and transportation disrupted. Shipping services between mainland China and Taiwan as well as ferry services between Hong Kong and Macau were suspended. Trains from Guangzhou to Beijing ceased operation. Hundreds of flights to and from Guangzhou, Shenzhen Hong Kong and Macau had been cancelled.
