Severe Weather in Northeast of US and Several Parts in the UK
Large parts of the US are plagued by massive snowstorms and freezing cold, particularly affecting the New England states in the Northeast and leading to massive disruptions in public life. In the states of New York and New Jersey, a state of emergency was declared. Because of the snowstorm with up to 36 centimeters of fresh snow around 2.500 flights were canceled nationwide. Another 7.000 flights had to be postponed. According to predictions of the National Weather Service, it will continue to snow until Friday evening (local time). The severe weather warnings particularly affect the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania as well as several other New England states.
Also, for large parts of Great Britain, a severe weather warning was issued for the upcoming days. According to the European Environment Agency, gale-force winds and widespread flooding can be expected.The flood risk extended along the coastline from north-west England, through Wales and south-west and southern England. Areas particularly at risk are the Isles of Scilly, the north and south coasts of Devon and Cornwall, Dorset and the Welsh coast.
